Do I need a Bass Amp?

Is a bass amp really necessary? Can't I just use my guitar amp?

Although you can plug a bass into a guitar amp and get sound, it is not recommended. Guitar amps are designed specifically to re-create the range of notes produced by an electric guitar. The effects, EQ, and speakers are tailored for guitar use. As a result, a bass will not sound particularly good through a guitar amp. In addition, since the speakers are not designed to handle the extreme low notes of a bass, they are likely to be damaged or destroyed, especially at high volumes. By contrast, since a bass amp is designed specifically for a bass, it will have effects, an EQ section, and speakers suitable for use with a bass.
