My violin won't make any sound

I just received my violin, and it doesn't seem to be working correctly. I rub the bow across the strings, but I just can't get any sound out of it. What's wrong?

In order to get the bow to properly vibrate the strings and create those wonderful tones we all love, you need to really apply the rosin.

Here's a tip:
Take a paper clip and scratch the top of the rosin to get a nice powder before applying the rosin to the bow. Apply the rosin generously to the bow. Don't worry about using too much rosin, it will require quite a bit to get a new bow properly geared up and ready to play.

Work the rosin into the bow and strings by drawing the bow across each string (as if playing the violin). New strings also require some breaking in to be ready to play.

This breaking in process can be rather messy, so you probably won't want to do it while sitting on your mother's nice furniture.

You will also need to apply some rosin each time you play the violin.

If you are still having difficulties with getting sound out of your violin, take it to a local music store or instructor and have them help you.

It may take a little time and work, but you'll get those strings singing sweetly.
