A lot of research goes into making a good condenser microphone. That's especially true for Earthworks, whose founder, David E. Blackmer, went the extra mile to discover as much about the human ear as he could. What he found was that our hearing is quite a bit finer than conventional wisdom led us to believe, and Blackmer realized that an entirely new perspective on microphone design was needed to take advantage of that. Earthworks microphones are the result, built with incredibly wide frequency response that takes into account the role that ultrasonic sounds play in what we hear. With their uniquely-shaped metal casings, Earthworks microphones are easy to pick out of a lineup. Earthworks is renowned for omnidirectional and cardioid microphones with unprecedented range, up to 40 or even 50kHz with mics such as the SR40mp QTC40mp, QTC50mp and M50mp. A 6mm electret capsule is at the heart of these condenser models, providing response up to 20kHz, with the frequencies above that coming in through the aid of electronic and mechanical filters.

The 40 and 50kHz models are definitely the headliners of Earthworks' condenser catalog, but there are plenty more to choose from for various different applications, including podium microphones like the FMR720 and choir mics such as the hanging C30. If you play piano and are looking for a great microphone for that, then take a look at the PM40T Touring PianoMic System. Or, for a freestanding and discreet stage solution, consider the FlexWand series with their built-in tripod bases.

Do you agree with David Blackmer's research results? After you hear the difference that Earthworks condenser microphones make, it would be difficult not to. Professional-grade, these models do nothing short of redefining just what a microphone can and should be. From the studio to the stage, wherever you roll out an Earthworks mic, you can always expect impressive performance.
