Bearing Edge Bevel

What is the bearing edge bevel on a drum?

The bearing edge bevel is the degree of cut on a drum shell. It affects the sound, quality, and ease of tuning dramatically. The inside usually has a 45° cut. The outside will usually have a smaller bevel. The more accurate the cut is on the bearing edge, the easier it is to tune a drum.

The bearing edge will affect how the drumstick responds, and how the drumhead resonates. The less wood touching the head, the better the drumstick response and drumhead resonation will be.
