Cymbal Playing Technique

What is the proper technique when playing cymbals?

If you play with proper technique, your cymbals can last a very long time. Depending on the player, it can be very helpful to angle the cymbal downward. The best way to hit a cymbal is by glancing it. Glancing helps with the tension of the cymbal, and won't cause the cymbal to bend dramatically when being played. Glancing means that you will hit the cymbal in a slanted or indirect motion. If you strike the cymbal with a glancing blow, it will evenly distribute tension and prolong the life of your cymbal. Remember the edge is the most delicate part. If you hit the cymbal in a direct motion, you will end up cracking the cymbal over time. If you strike the cymbal with a glancing blow, it will evenly distribute tension and allow your cymbal to last a long time.
