For such a straightforward instrument, the tambourine is remarkably versatile. Originating in Rome, India, Mesopotamia and the Middle East, the tambourine is an ancient percussion instrument that has been used in a wide range of musical genres throughout history. For the most part, its appearance and construction hasn't changed much since its beginnings, which is quite amazing when you consider that Europe was first introduced to the instrument in the 13th century.

From Mozart and Mike Love, to Stevie Nicks and Trent Reznor, the tambourine has been a mainstay in popular music for centuries. Consisting of a head, shell, and jingles, the unmistakable sound of a tambourine can be used to add color and character to an endless array of musical applications. Thankfully, many of the world's most well-known percussion brands specialize in the manufacturing of high-quality tambourines, including DW, CB, Gon Bops, and many others.

One of the many favored tambourines choices is the Sound Percussion PDM2016M-R tambourine. Factory-tuned and constructed with a genuine calfskin head, you'll have no problem cutting through in volume with this double-row tambourine. For drummers, the LP Hi-Hat tambourine is a superb option. Consisting of a durable ABS plastic frame, this tambourine can be equipped to any standard hi-hat pull rod, and produces a quick, trashy tone that’s incredibly responsive.

Understanding the basics of tambourine playing is so easy, it only makes sense for every percussionist to develop a good technique of the instrument. Used correctly in the right settings and situations, players can get quite creative with the tambourine. To get an idea of what can be accomplished with the tambourine, check out the many fantastic works of percussionist legend and Grammy award winner Glen Velez. Virtuoso's like Velez are proof that you can aspire to greatness with even the most uncomplicated instruments, and the tambourine is a perfect example.
